Pilates is not a workout for the weak. In each graceful glide and tiny pulse is a burn that pierces and punches you from within. Beads of sweat will drop. You will twerk uncontrollably. And right when you're about to cut the exercise short, your instructor will tell you the set's all over with. You'll give yourself a little pat on the back for getting your ass to class that day, as a giant mural inside Pilates ProWorks shiny new Coral Gables studio instructs you to.
Pilates ProWorks comes to us from San Francisco where it was founded by husband and wife team Oscar Sanin and Taylor Carter. Today there are 14 locations across the US and Colombia. Miami is its newest addition, and this pristine location on Merrick Way (near Miracle Mile) houses two studios where you can get your high clams in and your quick jabs in order. We say quick jabs because there's a fully functioning boutique boxing studio inside. More on that in a sec.
Even if you're a virtuoso on the reformer, class at Pilates ProWorks will be a different experience for you. First, the workout sequences and combinations are the studio's own. Second, because Pilates ProWorks has its own custom-designed "Fit-former" machine that's longer, wider, and more comfortable than your average reformer. Plus, it's made from Ducati carbon fiber material, so it's like the motorcycle of the fitness world. Sort of. Kind of? Ok, not really, but it's still fun to use.
Pilates ProWorks has 10 different workouts to choose from, however its Coral Gables studio has only released two: Pilates Pro, its signature class that combines resistance, lengthening, and strength training with cardio, and MatBox, which combines kickboxing, pilates, and yoga into one grueling hour-long session. If you've been looking to get into boxing but the thought of a traditional boxing gym scares you, then this is definitely the way to go. You'll split a heavyweight bag with a fellow boxer and go through all the basics–uppercuts, hooks, kicks– and then top off your sweat inducing workout with planks, scissors, and more muscle-toning moves. It's the perfect way to blow off some steam before or after your day starts.
Both classes are open to 12 people each, so they're small enough where the focus is on you. Right now Pilates ProWorks is offering a special membership fee for newbies: $99 gets you one month of unlimited classes. However, if you're just looking to give it a spinclasses are $30 each. Unless you could...
Try It Out for Free With Us!
You can try Pilates ProWorks out with us at this week's Racked Fit Club! To shake things up from last week's class at The Barre Code and to keep the cardio burn rolling from this weekend's Speed Dating "Boo" Camp (signups are still open!) we're giving the MatBox class a go. Come throw some punches with us on Wednesday, February 17th at 6:30pm. Former Tampa Bay Rays player Alex Koronis will be leading the class. He's cute, his class is tough– needless to say, you're in for a treat.
Also on board for the workout is local hair tie/bracelet line By Lilla, and we use the term hair tie quite loosely. The brand creates tools to hold your hair that also double as cute bracelets and they'll be available for purchase at the gym. Oh, and you're going to be the first readers to try Jugofresh's CPP juices, the brand's latest release that may just make the Miami-bred juice brand a nation-wide household name (more on that here).
So will you be coming? Class space is limited (only 12 slots available!), so shoot us an email at miami@racked.com to reserve your spot. Please include your full name and email addresses, and don't forget to bring a pair of hand wraps and/or boxing gloves. Otherwise, you can buy yourself a pair at the studio for $10 and keep 'em as a souvenir.
