What to Expect From 'Boss Nails' Season One

Housewives, the Kardashians, luxury real estate, models– Miami-based reality shows always show off the oceanfront mansion, never the hustle that comes before it. Boss Nails, Oxygen's latest reality show, is ready to give you a piece of the real Miami, transporting you to a little nail salon in West Little River called Tippie Toes.

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The show stars Dana Cody, fearless salon owner and 26-year-old stepmom to Aviva Drescher from the Real Housewives of New York. We won't lie to you: after watching the first episode, we were itching for some straight-talking beauty business heavyweight to pop in to restructure the unruly staff of male and female divas (see: Tabitha's Salon Takeover). Spoiler alert: it is no such show.

What Boss Nails is about, then, is one fiercely stylish woman's successes and struggles as an entrepreneur, cemented with the kind of drama you'd find when your staff becomes (or quite literally, is) family. Sure, her 76-year-old husband, Goerge Teichner, is intertwined in the storyline, but the show is really about Cody and the business she's built in honor of her late mother. We sat down with the reality star to talk about what we'll be getting our bedazzled claws into this season.

Congrats on scoring your own reality show! What should we expect from your first season?

Thank you! You should expect to see a lot of colorful personalities because the crew is so eccentric and wild at the same time. We work together because we're family, so there's a lot of drama but not how you would think.

There does seem to be a lot of staff drama on the show. Which of your employees makes you want to tear your hair out the most?

You know what? Everyone! But I'd probably say Paige. She's my younger cousin who's been with the company since before it was Tippie Toes. We call her the Tippie Toe brat. Other than that i'd say Nuny, who I call Nunisha.

How long have you been in the beauty industry?

I've a nail tech for about 12 years now. I practically came out of the womb doing nails! I grew up in a nail salon, so I didn't play with Barbie dolls; I played with nail tips.

And you're launching a new product during the show too.
I am introducing this new brand called Imperial Nails. I take precious metals from silver, rose gold, and platinum, and customize the plate to your nail bed. I can put any gems that you want on them– emeralds, rubies, pearls– in your nail beds. It's patented and trade-marked. I think the world is going to love it. You can put jewelry anywhere,  and now you can put it on your nails.

It feels like the employees are running the show during episode one. How would you respond to that?

My employees are bosses. I'm the boss but they are the "nail bosses." My job is to bring in the money, their job is to keep the salon running and the clients happy. They run the show and I come in, but at the end of the day we're family. Even though they make it a little crazy it never goes too far.

How involved is your husband, George, with your business?

I would say he's involved, but not that involved. The business was set prior to us becoming a couple, so he advises but he doesn't even have keys to the salon. He's my number one hitter, my best friend. We're partners because we're married but he lets me do my own thing.

Have you ever done Aviva's nails?

I have! I actually did them on the Real Housewives. It was a little awkward because I was tag teamed. But moving on to a private note, we actually go to the salon together.

What do you do on your off time?

I love to paddle board, I love skating, and I love writing. Whenever thoughts come to my head I have to write them down.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop in Miami?

Surprisingly, I don't shop; George does all the shopping for me! A lot of the items you'll see me wear are custom-made, but if i do go shopping it's from Domenico Vacca.

It's pretty remarkable that you own your own salon at 26. Do you have any advice for young business owners?

I would say continue to be creative, know your niche, and master it. Also, don't allow age to defy what you have going on. People will look down on you because they think you don't know what you're talking about, like you're a kid, but you have to [prove them wrong].

"Boss Nails" premieres on Tuesday, August 11th at 9/8c on Oxygen.
