Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
1) Doral: Hearing about a mysterious abandoned train somewhere in Miami, Curbed Miami photog Silvia Ros hunted it down and came back with photos of fantastically deteriorating passenger cars on a remote railroad spur. The train itself was a failed restoration project that includes a circus mail car, two cars from the U.S. Presidential Train, and a palace car that had once served as an ice cream parlor.
2) Star Island: Talk show lady Rosie O'Donnell really was scared away from her Star Island home of 18 years by us crazy Miamians. Apparently the combination of constant tour boats cruising by her house, and two Real Housewives of Miami for neighbors finally drove her over out of town, literally.
3) South Beach: An abandoned hospital with all the trappings of a first-rate horror movie, broken medical equipment, smashed windows, and randomly placed gurneys that look as if they were frantically left by hospital staff fleeing from an outbreak of some apocalyptic disease, or something, sits in the heart of South Beach. And we've got photos!
